MERMAID PARADE
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade: you won’t find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. One of Coney Island’s most beloved annual traditions, the Mermaid Parade is exactly what it sounds like: a parade of revelers coming together to share their love for seashell bras and prehensile webbed tails.
Like everything else about Coney Island, what makes the Mermaid Parade so compelling is its ability to be at once innocent and frivolous but with that signature undertone of unwholesomeness that makes Luna Park head and shoulders more interesting than any Six Flags. In that spirit this promotional poster features hand rendered type that borders (a reference to the parade’s recursive route) a heavily distorted image of Ariel (the Little Mermaid, 1989), a similarly warped take on a wholesome family favorite.
